Otumfuo calls for urgent action against “galamsey” to preserve Ghana’s environmental heritage

During his address on Sunday (12 May), the Asantehene underscored that the restoration of the environment should be the country’s primary focus

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, marked the occasion of his 25th anniversary as the 16th occupant of the Golden Stool by emphasizing the critical need to address the environmental devastation caused by illegal mining, known as Galamsey, in Ghana.

During his address on Sunday (12 May), the Asantehene underscored that the restoration of the environment should be the country’s primary focus, stressing that the present generation must not be the one to destroy the precious legacy left by their ancestors.

He urged resolute action against galamsey, emphasising the importance of reclaiming and preserving Ghana’s natural heritage.

“Our top priority must be the reclamation of our environment from the ravages of galamsey. We cannot be the generation that destroys the most gracious heritage bequeathed to us by our forefathers to satisfy the greed of a few miscreants. For whatever it takes, we must defeat this scourge,” he said.

In addition to environmental concerns, the king highlighted the importance of economic growth and the empowerment of entrepreneurs in Ghana.

He encouraged efforts to strengthen the economy and foster entrepreneurship to drive progress and prosperity in the nation.

As Ghana approaches elections, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II also urged citizens to uphold the integrity of the electoral process, emphasizing the importance of avoiding actions that could disrupt or undermine the democratic exercise.

Thousands of people from diverse backgrounds gathered at Manhyia to pay homage to the Asante monarch, who had conducted morning rituals before sitting in state for the occasion.

The iconic Golden Stool was also displayed for public viewing.
